Notes

First pressing is this issue (MCA logo on rear, "anti-parent" sticker on some, "UNI/4" matrices).
First version recut/reissue is here: Damaged (No MCA logo, "Kendun" matrices).
Second version recut/reissue is here: Damaged (no MCA logo, "Neo-Gelatinous" and S-9375/6 matrices).

MCA Records (with which Unicorn Records had a distribution deal) distribution chief Al Bergamo announced that the company would not distribute this record, deeming that "It just didn't seem to have any redeeming social value" and because, as a parent with two children, he found it an anti-parent record. "Damaged" was eventually released by Unicorn through an independent distributor. Later, after Unicorn's bankruptcy and almost years of litigation during which Black Flag was forbidden to release any record, they re-released and distributed it through Greg Ginn's own SST Records.
This record cost Black Flag $8,000 (USD) to produce. 25,000 pressed.
Lyric sheet was available by mail.

Some early copies released with a sticker stating "As A Parent..., I Found It An Anti-Parent Record..." on the back of the jacket, covering up the MCA distribution logo.

Album

Damaged is the debut studio album by the American hardcore punk band Black Flag. SST Records released it on December 5, 1981. The album was largely ignored by critics and the public at the time of its release but has since been recognized as a classic and one of the most influential punk rock records ever made, appearing on a number of best of lists by fans and critics alike. The album was ranked number 340 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Pitchfork also ranked it. What if Greg Ginn and the rest of the band never hired Henry Rollins as a vocalist and went on to record Damaged with Dez on vocals SIDE A: 1. Black Flag. Although Black Flag had been recording for three years prior to this release, the fact that Henry Rollins was now their lead singer made all the difference. His furious bellow and barely contained ferocity was the missing piece the band needed to become great. Black Flags debut LP is a living document of hardcore, a mutable album of anger, empathy, and politics. Its raw power is still felt today, and its influence on the genre is incalculable. Rollins joined Black Flag less than a year earlier when he was just a fan who viewed them as hardcore punk godheads. In his memoir, Get in the Van, Rollins wrote of watching the band perform: It was one of the most powerful things Ive ever seen, he said. All the songs were abrupt and crushing. Black Flag- Damaged. It is said that the period from 1980 to 1986 is considered to peak of hardcore punk. Among some highly successful hardcore punk bands of the decade include the politically-enraged Dead Kennedys, as well as Bad Brains, and The Germs. Black Flag was formed in southern California in 1976 and was formed by guitarist Greg Guinn, and at first recruited vocalist Keith Morris and drummer Brian Migdol. Long time bassist, Chuck Dukowski was the bassist for most of the bands career. The band went through many vocalists before early 81, when a young Henry Rollins was hired as the bands vocalist. About Damaged. Black Flags debut studio album. This album was going to be released on Unicorn Records, an imprint of MCA Records, until MCA Records President Al Bergamo listened to it and called it anti-parent. This lead the band to release it on their own record label SST Records. Damaged Q&A. Photography Ed Colver. Label SST Records. Listen free to Black Flag Damaged Rise Above, Spray Paint and more. 15 tracks . Damaged is the first full-length LP release by the American hardcore punk band Black Flag. Released in December 1981 on SST Records. It is widely considered both a classic of the era and the peak of Black Flag's career. The album cover, shot by punk photographer Ed Colver, features Rollins putting his fist through a mirror. The effect was made by cracking the mirror with a hammer, while the blood on Rollins' wrist is a mixture of red ink and coffee. Side One A1. Rise Above . Genre: Hardcore Punk. Album cover is me when I lose game of fornite and get no sex for 35 painfully depressing minutes felt like torture, but like the cock and ball torture kind of shit. 8mo. fubaru00. so fucking angry and so fucking stupid, that there was no way it wouldn't work well

For what it’s worth, the MCA logo NOT covered by the Anti-Parent sticker is much rarer than with the sticker. The band and SST employees hand applied these after the fact and only a small number escaped. This is confirmed by Rollins. Of course it could be possible to remove the sticker without causing damage.

Wow. This makes sense and I kinda wondered why the stickered version was in such demand.
Coiron
The SST online store has a thumbnail pic of the color cover, do the new pressings have it or is still b&w?

I just saw a version with a printed "sticker" on back side. Does anyone knows what version or whatever this is? Maybe unofficial.
jorik
Seen this about too, i'm curious, how's the sound on it?
Thetath
I have this one as well.. Got it from a shop even. Is this a high quality bootleg or unofficial?
olgasmile
I saw what looked like a first press stickered copy on eBay for a good price so snapped it up. When it arrived it was as you describe - a printed sticker. I was certain it is a fake, so complained to to seller, who refunded. I kept the record for its novelty value.
Kelerana
Does anyone know why all the represses after 82 stopped using a full color cover?
Maveri
I can provide scans of the lyric sheet (available only via mail order back then) so if interested just pm me.

Hey!If you could forward me a lyric sheet Scan ...It would be much appreciated !Thanks in [email protected]

Looking for a sealed original copy of Damaged with the anti parent sticker. Will pay $$$

I love that Prince "purple rain" and Springsteen "born in the U$A" are in the recommendations for this. Hahaha.. ummmmm?
betelgeuze
i can't say that i see the issue here tbh

User47, might be a promo flat? Like the kind that labels sent out to shops as a cheaper way to promote than full size posters
Wal
My copy has, like, a 12x12 poster reproduction of the album cover, blank on the other side. Unicorn logo and all. Was pinned to someone’s wall at some point. Anyone else have anything like this?
Venemarr
My copy has this poster too. Bought it used in the early 90s.
Gavirgas
I have the same thing. I believe it is a promo flat when it was originally released rather than a repro.
Manazar
I have a copy that has a blank all white back cover....What is this?
Nicanagy
Thanks so much for responding and keeping me in the loopKevin
Alsanadar
I have no idea! I have the same copy and can't find anything regarding the pressing. I'll certainly let you know if I find out anything.
Oghmaghma
A good album but I prefer the earlier singers by far. At this stage of his career Rollins sang like Froggy from Our Gang, or like he had some hard morsel of food stuck in his throat.
Quinthy
That's Dez Cadena who sounds like he's gargled with glass shards. He and Rollins both sing on this LP. I kinda like that. Fits their image and sound very well. This is So Cal punk's high water mark. BF toured relentlessly and showed the world how DIY is done. If Helen of Troy was the face that launched a thousand ships, this is the LP that launched a thousand punk bands and labels, etc.
White gold
Another ridicolous "my copy is better than yours!" listing: i purchsed my copy sealed (and stickered!) back then and guaranteed there was no "promo booklet" inside. Oh well, as already said, anyone can add what he wants to his own (i'm going to include a piece of Henry's broken mirror right now... aaaarrrrgggghhhhhhh!!!!...)
Risky Strong Dromedary
If your looking for a starting point for Black Flag's music, look no further than "Damaged". Damaged is a non-stop musical movement full of high speed, high energy music which would later be considered the blueprint for Hardcore. Though all the songs from Damaged were written prior to Rollins entering the band, his vocals and intensity pull all the songs together perfectly. Not as punkish as the earlier singles, those looking for the more a-typical punk songs would be better suited with the singles "Jealous Again" & Nervous Breakdown", which are equally amazing and important records.

On the A-side of my copy(blue label, anti parent sticker) it says Uni/4 A-RE and then that is scratched out and the regular matrix etching here is printed. Is that how all of the early copies are?

My copy is just like yours.

When I first ever heard this album I realised Black Flag were a force to be reckoned with. A great album to listen to when your pissed off with the world.
