MCA Records (with which Unicorn Records had a distribution deal) distribution chief Al Bergamo announced that the company would not distribute this record, deeming that "It just didn't seem to have any redeeming social value" and because, as a parent with two children, he found it an anti-parent record. "Damaged" was eventually released by Unicorn through an independent distributor. Later, after Unicorn's bankruptcy and almost years of litigation during which Black Flag was forbidden to release any record, they re-released and distributed it through Greg Ginn's own SST Records.
This record cost Black Flag $8,000 (USD) to produce. 25,000 pressed.
Lyric sheet was available by mail.
Some early copies released with a sticker stating "As A Parent..., I Found It An Anti-Parent Record..." on the back of the jacket, covering up the MCA distribution logo.

Damaged is the debut studio album by the American hardcore punk band Black Flag. SST Records released it on December 5, 1981. The album was largely ignored by critics and the public at the time of its release but has since been recognized as a classic and one of the most influential punk rock records ever made, appearing on a number of best of lists by fans and critics alike. The album was ranked number 340 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Pitchfork also ranked it. What if Greg Ginn and the rest of the band never hired Henry Rollins as a vocalist and went on to record Damaged with Dez on vocals SIDE A: 1. Black Flag. Although Black Flag had been recording for three years prior to this release, the fact that Henry Rollins was now their lead singer made all the difference. His furious bellow and barely contained ferocity was the missing piece the band needed to become great. Black Flags debut LP is a living document of hardcore, a mutable album of anger, empathy, and politics. Its raw power is still felt today, and its influence on the genre is incalculable. Rollins joined Black Flag less than a year earlier when he was just a fan who viewed them as hardcore punk godheads. In his memoir, Get in the Van, Rollins wrote of watching the band perform: It was one of the most powerful things Ive ever seen, he said. All the songs were abrupt and crushing. Black Flag- Damaged. It is said that the period from 1980 to 1986 is considered to peak of hardcore punk. Among some highly successful hardcore punk bands of the decade include the politically-enraged Dead Kennedys, as well as Bad Brains, and The Germs. Black Flag was formed in southern California in 1976 and was formed by guitarist Greg Guinn, and at first recruited vocalist Keith Morris and drummer Brian Migdol. Long time bassist, Chuck Dukowski was the bassist for most of the bands career. The band went through many vocalists before early 81, when a young Henry Rollins was hired as the bands vocalist. About Damaged. Black Flags debut studio album. This album was going to be released on Unicorn Records, an imprint of MCA Records, until MCA Records President Al Bergamo listened to it and called it anti-parent. This lead the band to release it on their own record label SST Records. Damaged Q&A. Photography Ed Colver. Label SST Records. The album cover, shot by punk photographer Ed Colver, features Rollins putting his fist through a mirror. The effect was made by cracking the mirror with a hammer, while the blood on Rollins' wrist is a mixture of red ink and coffee. Side One A1. Rise Above . Genre: Hardcore Punk.
