The Letter U and the Numeral 2 is a 96-page magazine and 25-minute CD by Negativland detailing their conflict with the band U2, over Negativland's EP of the same name. Two months after its release, SST Records blocked its distribution with a lawsuit claiming, among other things, copyright infringement based on reproductions of press releases sent to the press by SST in essence, suing the band for printing their threat to sue the band. Fair Use: The Story of the Letter U and the Numeral 2 is a 270-page book and ten track CD released in 1995 by Negativland detailing their lawsuits with U2's record label Island Records for their EP U2, including many legal documents and correspondences. This book includes the text from the original magazine The Letter U and the Numeral 2 which caused Negativland's record label SST Records to sue Negativland for publishing financial information on SST and the story of how they were being treated by SST. After the falling-out with their record label, SST, in the aftermath of the U2 single, Negativland decided to head back to their very own label, Seeland. Their first act was to release The Letter U and the Numeral 2, a bookletCD package that detailed the history of the controversy, including many legal documents and bits of correspondence. The highlight is the inclusion of a Mondo 2000 interview with the Edge guitarist of U2 conducted surreptitiously by members of Negativland. Producers Negativland. Writers Negativland. More Negativland albums. Negativland invites us to inspect more closely the surrounding world and its media, a practice Grigg calls instructive, terribly fun, and a bit psychotic. Using closer inspection as a working philosophy, Negativland creates plenty of media itself: CDs, LPs, EPs, cassettes, a video, magazines. Time Zones Exchange Project, a double CD with a 28-page booklet, released last October, is an elaborate, Church of the SubGenius-meets-Griffin & Sabine historical hoax. And the suit has fueled the January release of Fair Use: The Story of the Letter U and the Numeral 2. Artist: Negativland. Date Released: September 1992. Label: Seeland. Produced By: Negativland. To Negativland, U2 became the epitome of bully, corporate rock stardom. When this became the case, they did everything in their power to humiliate U2. Oh, and the single the band got sued over is very funny too. Maybe U2 and Negativland should start a joint charity called The Snuggles Foundation with the proceeds going toward copyright law reform.
