Seven of the album's nine songs were recorded with the reunited Crazy Horse, in which rhythm guitarist Frank Sampedro had replaced the late Danny Whitten, but there were also nods to other popular Young styles in Pardon My Heart, an acoustic song that would have fit on Harvest, his most popular album, and Through My Sails, retrieved from one of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's abortive recording sessions. While it lacks the commercial power of Harvest , After the Gold Rush and Rust Never Sleeps ' iconic status or the cult appeal of Tonights the Night , its almost the equal of all of them. After completing the Ditch Trilogy of Time Fades Away, On the Beach and Tonights the Night in 1973, Young joined up with Crosby, Stills & Nash for a new record that was to be called Human Highway. So Young called Crazy Horse, who had undergone an incredibly tumultuous two years. Neil Young boasted of steering his career into the ditch in the early 1970s, choosing to make sad, lonely, difficult records in the wake of Harvests wide success. The Ditch Trilogy as Young enthusiasts dubbed it of Time Fades Away, Tonights the Night , and On the Beach marks his creative peak-yet for decades, this era was neglected and incomplete. On the Beach only made it to CD in 2003, and Time Fades Away was never reissued digitally. Thanks to the vinyl revival, the trio is finally available
