Gifted & Black is the twentieth studio album by jazz singer, pianist and songwriter Nina Simone. It was released on August 25, 1970, by Canyon Records Hollywood. Roger Nupie, in a personal communication with The Nina Simone Database, who suggest these may be Simone's earliest existing recordings and may have been made in Philadelphia 1955, states that there is no info about the date, location or musicians. He goes on to state that the album was originally not intended for release and that. That category was dominated by Aretha Franklin, who won it every year from 1968-1975, beating Simone twice Nina was also nominated in 1968 for You'll Go to Hell. Franklin's Don't Play That Song was the 1971 winner, but Aretha loved Young, Gifted And Black and visited Simone in Barbados to personally ask permission to cover it. Franklin included it on her 1972 album, also titled Young, Gifted and B. NEW CD Album Nina Simone - The Amazing Nina Simone Mini LP Style Card Case. P&p: rub p&p. Black Gold is a live album by American jazz musician Nina Simone recorded in 1969 at the Philharmonic Hall, New York City. She got a 1971 nomination for a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, but lost to Aretha Franklin. The album is especially notable because it features the civil rights anthem song To Be Young, Gifted and Black. The performance that night also included a calypso version of Leonard Cohen's Suzanne.
