Album

The Complete Recordings is a compilation album by American Delta blues musician Robert Johnson. The 41 songs were recorded in two sessions in Dallas and San Antonio, Texas for the American Record Company ARC during 1936 and 1937. Most were first released on 78 rpm records in 1937. The Complete Recordings, released August 28, 1990, by Columbia Records, contains every recording Johnson is known to have made, with the exception of an alternate take of Travelling Riverside Blues. Acoustic Sounds, Inc. In practical terms, theres not much need for Robert Johnsons The Complete Recordings: The Centennial Collection. There are no undiscovered master or alternate takes, new remastering can only improve the original acetates and 78s so much, and apart from the sequencing of alternate takes after the masters, a debatable merit for listenability, the original 1990 box set The Complete Recordings did everything right. The set includes a new essay by Ted Gioia alongside a new biography of Robert Johnson written by Stephen C. LaVere completely different from his essay in the 1990 version. The Centennial Collection is an impressive collection of Robert Johnson's work. It is the full collection of singles and outtakes that was recorded by the blues artist. Those who already own the CD know that the music by comparison to previous releases are quite impressive and easily the best. The Complete Recordings 41 Tracks. The Complete Robert Johnson. The Original Delta Blues. A very unique and fun way to experience Johnson's output, not only pairing the songs as they were originally released, but replicating the method many would have handled and stored them. Too bad it is a pricey set, and of limited availability. Uses the same up to date digital masters as the other official Centennial Collection offerings, this is the best Robert Johnson will ever sound, and it is superb considering the available materials.
Absolutely - it's amazing. But it has to be pointed out - as discussed/argued in ridiculous length in various internet forums - that the vinyl sourcing/masters differ from that of the CD editions that also came out for the 100th anniversary of Robert's death. The sound of both formats are great, but the CD and vinyl versions are categorically not the same thing. I also have this: https://www.discogs.com/Robert-Johnson-The-Centennial-Collection/release/10168839 - which came some years later. Again, it's great, but my ears tell me that this record was merely a transfer of the CD/digital Centennial remaster rather than the bespoke masterings used for the 10" reproductions in the box set. Do yell if anybody knows otherwise.
