Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is the third studio album by American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins, released on October 23, 1995 in the United Kingdom and a day later in the United States on Virgin Records. Produced by frontman Billy Corgan with Flood and Alan Moulder, the 28-track album was released as a two-disc CD and triple LP. The album features a wide array of styles, as well as greater musical input from bassist D'arcy Wretzky and second guitarist James Iha. The Smashing Pumpkins didn't shy away from making the follow-up to the grand, intricate Siamese Dream. With Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, the band turns in one of the most ambitious and indulgent albums in rock history. Lasting over two hours and featuring 28 songs, the album is certainly a challenging listen. Формируйте собственную коллекция коллекцию записей The Smashing Pumpkins. The third studio album by the Smashing Pumpkins was released in October of 1995 as a double-disc. Despite the high price tag in the pre-digital era, the album was quickly certified diamond, an accomplishment made by very few rock bands in the 1990s. Nobody in the music industry saw it coming except for lead singer-songwriter Billy Corgan, who considered this success to be vindication. The album brought in eight Grammy nominations and ranks as one of Rolling Stones Greatest Albums of All Time. When Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan boasted that he would follow the triple-platinum Siamese Dream with a sprawling double album that would be The Wall for Generation X, the assumption was that he would make a concept album like Roger Waters rock opera about the lack of communication and love in modern society. But the 28 songs on Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness arent linked by a libretto. Theyre only connected conceptually through the broad theme of being part of a day in the life of a typical, alienated teen

The mastering on this release it's not the best. I knew the guy who did it and his work is pretty bad. He has mastered some of my albums that I put out and we always had significant problems
i got 3 smashing pumpkins releases that are cut by this guy and they are all fine to me, maybe some sides might have a bit of inner groove distortion (can't say it is super evident, u have to look for it if it's there) but most of the sound is spot on in my opinion, i won't deny that it could be done better probably, but i can barely see faults on the job as it is. Maybe he works better when cutting material that has already been mastered before for other mediums? idk.
I just got my copy a few months ago. Brand new. No surface noise problems at all like some have reported, so it must be fixed! It sounds FANTASTIC!!! Great pressing!!! I have original pressings of all SP LP's except this, and I'm pretty happy with having this in my collection!
Just got my hands on the 4LP EU-Version and while I stil find this one too expensive (I really don't need this fancy deluxe stuff) the pressing quality and sound of the remaster is just awesome. Though I must admit, that the album has lost (to me) some of the magic over time. The album is just too long and there are definitely some filler that I don't really need. My favorite album will always be siamese dream.
I just got the repress of 2012, USA version of the The Smashing Pumpkins ‎– Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness 4x LP Vinyl Reissue.https://www.discogs.com/release/4082874I got it off ebay; initially told it was the EU/UK version. Ah, well ..... As all have said, beautiful vinyl, nice packaging. For Zero, i do her the IGD that many others have fedback about. However, it is ONLY in the penultimate 30 seconds, when Billy Corgan is screaming his vocals - that i hear the IGD / distortion bit. The last part of the song, the last line when he sings the line "She's my one and only" , that sounds Perfect, with NO IGD ! ... It is my understanding that, if there is IGD, it should get worse closer to the label the stylus goes, or remains the same, not get better. So, how come the vocals in the last line - sang 'acapella' with no backing guitars - sounds great with no distortion, whereas the earlier vocals are distorted ? is it because of the loud guitars affecting the vocals and hence the grooves ? or, because it is mastered 'hot'/'loud' ?Does that make sense ?And, yes - my TT and cartridge and stylus are properly aligned and tuned, etc. - other records with minimal dead wax have no issues.Sorry , i know my description is not very technical ! . Thanks in Advance.
I agree with you. I got the 2012 vinyl reissue of "Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness" this year from Amazon.com. I like this album, it makes me feel like I'm in a blank storybook that I could make my dreams & nightmares come true.I have my record player to play this album & I enjoyed it from beginning to end. There are some skips on my copy, but that's OK. The rest of the other side of the vinyl is good, no surface noise as well. I like to get that crisp clear sound of this 2012 vinyl reissue. This is a double album, so on the CD is 2 discs (on the 2012 reissue, it's 5 discs, 1 DVD & includes a decoupage kit) & the 2012 vinyl reissue is 4xLP being pressed on 180g vinyl (while the 1996 vinyl pressing, it's a 3xLP with a rearranged track order with 2 bonus tracks). The concept of this album is day & night entitled: "Dawn To Dusk" (Disc 1) & "Twilight To Starlight" (Disc 2).I highly recommend this album, because it's a masterpiece of the 90's. Thanks.

I own the repress of 2012The packaging is top and the sound is there and there ...If anyone can tell me the difference between the Repress USA and the Europe?Because Matrix numbers are the same
Lol .. baltringue ????????????.. En mode english et tout et tout !!!
Difference is in copyright information on the apple.USA: 2012 Virgin Records America, Inc....UK: 2012. The copyright in this sound...
found mine in a record shop ,sounds great...had this on cass and CD. It don't seem to recorded the same ,the versions sound more raw.
If I purchased this from Amazon U.S. two months ago, is it possible To get the messed up version?
Mine sounds great. A beautiful box set of perhaps the best 90s album.
Abandoned Electrical
My copy (just bought from the recent Barnes sale) sounds phenomenal.
My copy of this sounded like complete garbage, very poor pressing. Amazing artwork. Amazing music. Bad manufacturing by pressing plant.
So 5 stars in spite of it being garbage? These type of reviews are in no way helpful to inform someone in the market for this LP.
Mine sounds great. Minor distortion on the first side of first record. Depending on how loud it is though you can't hear it until song transitions or quiet parts. All other sides of each record sound great. The lyric book is awesome, the artwork on everything is awesome, and the notes are awesome. What more could you ask for?
Extremely happy with this boxset, art work, booklet and records! Must play LOUD! Enjoy and rock on music fans.
I perceive some issues with this pressing but I can only blame pressing plant. These issues are little though, seems I got one of the latest reissues.
I also received the new pressing this week. It's flawless. No IGD anywhere to be found.
Same here.
As of May 2015, a new version pressed from new lacquers is available at US retailers. From the outside packaging, there is no way to tell if it is the new version. The new pressing has more dead wax and 'zero' IGD.
rose1978 WTF is that "IDG"????????????????? IGD is inner groove distortion
happy light
So there's really no way to know what you're getting?
WTF is that "IDG"?????????????????
Thought I would weigh in having just acquired this yesterday. Sounds great on my system, as mentioned below, no distortion on the problematic tracks such as 'zero'. I think it really comes down to what setup you have but unscrewing the needle head and cleaning it out every once in awhile is strongly advised and my indeed solve some of the problems listed below.I'm extremely happy with this package, everything from the box, booklets and of course vinyl look and feel fantastic. Do not hesitate to pick this up. I would advise looking at Amazon as the shipping on here will always be a fortune due to the weight.
How come this album has never been released in a standard edition for under 50+ dollars?! "C'mon billy"i know its 4lps but theres been albums spread over just as many(and sound good) for under 30!
I think the 3LPs are counterfeit copies that should avoided.
This is a deluxe edition, there were earlier 3 lp versions, but they have gone up in price since it came out. Even Siamese Dream is about $50 at B&N which I think is crazy. In a perfect world $30 for Siamese Dream and $50-60 for Mellon Collie. I was lucky and bought it brand new for a good price.
Some tracks on side D and later on as well skip really badly. It's frustrating because it's a beautiful set physically.
It hate that, it seems to happen with different players.
I've read all of the reviews and have a friend who got a bad sounding copy of this reissue as well. Despite all of that I still decided to take a chance and buy it for $65 on sale at my local record shop. I have listened to all of the discs now and I don't notice any quality issues with this pressing.
This is the saddest remaster in the world, the original copy costs over $200 but it actually sounds reasonable after picking this up. I got it for $60 and it is garbage, the audio source sounds like from MP3's. Zero sounds horrible and just gives me a headache listening to it. Sold this garbage as soon as I looked up at the other complaints, at first thinking it was an issue with my copy but everyone has this issue. As someone who looks for that audiophile sound, I am truly disappointed with this especially for the price.
Yellow Judge
The vinyl reissue...
I agree, cant understand all the comments saying it sounds very good...
You are referring to the LP or the CD? Thanks, Robb
Also a common thing with this vinyl box set release is that the book is the wrong one - containing the CD/DVD info in the back! Some big issues (with the bad sounding as well!!) concerning the hefty price for this one!
Only zero (great song though) has bad sound, the rest are fantastic!
Awesome box set (physically!) otherwise! Very well done!
Zero = catastrophy... sounds really bad, distorted. Earache turns to headache..
I'm no audiophile and even I can tell how bad side A is pressed. Zero sounds like 96k rip of an mp3 from 1998. Real poor highs and mids. All n all though it's a good album to have if you're a fan of Smashing Pumpkins... Just know it's not perfect. The engineer in charge of this should be ashamed. Buy it for no more than $60.

Getting one of these tomorrow, will report back with problems (if any, fingers crossed...)
let us know. I am intrigued
Add my copy to the list of issues with "Zero". It sounds like an 8-track through one of those old mono, portable players from the '70s.I also much prefer the original 3xLP vinyl's running order. I've never been a fan of the CD running order; the original vinyl seemed to group the songs by mood and sound much better. It's also hard to figure out why this was originally on 3 records with 30 songs, but now it takes 4 records to give us 28 songs. On the plus side, everything but "Zero" sounds fantastic, the vinyl is high quality, the books are quite nice (especially the track-by-track commentary by Corgan), and the box is attractive. But I think I am still more likely to spin the 3xLP version, for the extra songs and better running order.
no issues w/ zero, i don't see what the fuss is about maybe i lucked out?
what's your setup?
you might have the EU copy?
First listen and zero was the only glaring issue.. but honestly Id have to go back and listen to the cd to see if it wasn't distorted similarly. not the most hi fi/audiophile album of all time so I dont really care.
I can't agree to all the negative comments on this pressing, but maybe I've just been lucky with my copy. I only hear very slight distortion at the end of Zero, but the grooves also run almost all the way to the label. The rest sounds really good actually and no skips. So check your rig and make sure it is setup properly, the problems people seem to have could stem from that.
Great packaging but I have the same issues as most. Mastered too hot for vinyl and major skipping problems for non-audiophile turntable. Also Zero is a mess. Hoping the UK version is better.
Little Devil
Mine arrived on Friday. With trepidation I loaded up Side A and feared the worst. Zero is distorted near the end of the track. My rig is substantial and well setup. I cleaned it twice with a high end wet vac and sadly, the distortion remains. It's the pressing. Aside from Zero (thus far the only track badly distorted on my copy) the entire package is incredible. The innner sleeves are high quality, the outters are artful and the box is robust. Maybe the EU pressing is better (more deadwax I am told). If one can enjoy without Zero sounding perfect, then this is a worthwhile set.
I an very happy with the sound of this remastered vinyl! My system brings everything through bright and clear as it should be.
The heavy tracks sound pretty bad on mine - such a shame. "Zero" is distorted beyond belief due to bad pressing, and there's a lot of mud in the mix on other heavy tracks. The packaging and booklets are amazing but quality control on the mastering/pressing doesn't match it. I wonder whether there will be a product recall or another issue?
Sounds great on my setup. It is cut pretty hot which buries any surface noise. Not the same thing as the loudness war where music is excessively compressed. This vinyl has more dynamic range than the original or remastered CD.
The mastering is far too "hot". The loudness war now strikes vinyl. Very sad.
Amazing audio and packaging quality. Stan Getz handled the vinyl remastering and it sounds fantastic. The original pressing suffered from low sound levels due to the fact that they tried to cram to many songs on each side. This reissue is fantastic and the packaging and booklet-inserts are a great gift to the fine records contained therein.
Mine plays through just fine, but does anyone have skips in Porcelina and 1979 like I do? That's my only gripe.
I only had a couple of skips on 1979, but cleaned that side thoroughly and didn't have an issue after that.
I had skips in Fuck You, Love, Cupid, and 1979. I washed the records multiple times to no avail-finally played them backwards. Most of the skips are now gone but there is still quite a bit of static noise at the beginning of WBFTT.
I always clean new discs too, mine played fine and sounded immaculate. Impressed at the overall quality-happyman I am. ****
Wow, I haven't even listened to my copy yet and now reading that the discs have sound issues I'm more bummed out. What was a big let down for me is that the track listing follows the CD and not the original re-sequenced listing that the original LP pressing had. Oh well, I guess its good I plan on putting a crap ton of money down on a original copy later on down the road.
Lost Python
The OG pressing is very very quiet because they squished to much music on each side. Stan Getz handled the vinyl remastering and my copy sounds amazing.
Did you guys give it a good dry brushing before spinning it?Sometimes artifacts from the cutting of the LPs get left behind.I usually brush all LPs even brand new ones.
I wet-washed mine in a Nitty Gritty and still have issues.
does side A sound distorted and generally terrible to anyone else?
Yeah it does. After some investigation it seems the last track on each side was pressed too far into the "dead wax", causing audio distortion.
"To forgive" has jumps ... and sounds is distorted too, but on face BSad really really sad
There's a lot of surface noise on side A for me.
